EOE eLearning Courseware
Explaining complex ordnance concepts through structured digital learning.
A suite of online modules was designed and delivered for the Explosives Ordnance Engineering MSc, transitioning instruction from extended in-person PowerPoint sessions to a structured, reusable digital learning format.
The design of a custom rapid-authoring framework was led to standardise interaction patterns, support accessibility, and enable efficient content reuse. The visual language, interaction model, and media assets were defined in close collaboration with subject specialists.
The modules integrate detailed process animations and video-based laboratory simulations, enabling learners to explore hazardous or impractical scenarios in a safe environment. These resources are now implemented across the MSc programme and by external organisations, with selected content translated for international delivery.
Energy vs. Power - Candle and Propellant
Interactive physics activity shown in a video walkthrough. Challenges learners to compare total energy content and rate of energy release, using matched power values to distinguish sustained combustion from rapid ignition.
Artillery Ballistics - Energy & Power Calculation
Interactive physics problem shown in a video walkthrough. Challenges learners to calculate the propellant mass needed for a specified muzzle velocity, applying energy conversion and quantitative reasoning with immediate feedback.
Fuel-Oxidiser Mixing - Controlled and Weaponised
Interactive physics activity shown in a video walkthrough. Contrasts controlled fuel-oxidiser mixing for propulsion with uncontrolled and weaponised reactions, showing how energy release rate governs outcome.
Explosive Compositions - Fuel/Oxidiser Selection
Interactive laboratory simulation shown in a video walkthrough. Challenges learners to construct a viable gaseous fuel-oxidiser composition through decision-based selection, with system response and immediate feedback.
Molecular Explosives - Functional Group Assembly
Interactive chemistry simulation shown in a video walkthrough. Challenges learners to build molecular explosives by assembling functional groups, linking molecular structure, oxidiser content, and explosive behaviour.
Explosive Trains - Igniter vs. Detonator
Interactive ordnance initiation simulation shown in a video walkthrough. Compares igniter and detonator trains to show staged energy transfer, contrasting progressive ignition with shockwave detonation and safety hierarchy design.
Molecular Explosives - Oxidiser Groups and Nitramines
Educational visual showing how oxidiser groups and molecular structure influence explosive power, using nitramines as a case study.
Burning Process - Propellant Burn Rate
Educational visual showing the relationship between pressure and linear burn rate, using a calculation-based learning activity to reinforce propellant combustion principles.
